Textiles Developments

Development Drawings

Final

I drawn up ideas on wrappings and how to develop these skills. I drawn clothing garments and jewellery ideas which I could interpret with my textiles skills.
I made up a necklace made with wraps, wire and fabric details. I used fabric, thread, yarn, paper, wire, twigs and other small found objects within my wrapping as well as threading other little made up bits such as fabric bubbles and wire circles to finalise my necklace.

Wire Work

Combining all the skills I have learnt, I made some wire pieces that held wraps, weaves and other textile techniques. I made these wire sculptures inspired by the work of Isabelle Bronte, Louise Wilson and Julia Jowett. The combination of fabric and wire makes for good wall hangings and interior pieces. I'd love to hang these pieces in a collection on my wall or use them together as an ornament on my windowsill.

Wrapping

Although very straight forward, wrappings and bindings create lovely pieces of work. I used clumps of thread and fabric as well as twigs, wire and paper in my wraps. The more fabric and thread you use, the better the textures and colours are within the wrappings.
I researched the work of Nikky Bergman, Jean Draper and that of an old students and combined styles to create my own personal wrappings. I could develop these to make jewellery, house hold ornaments or wall hangings.

Weaving

Inspired by textile artists like Louise Martin, Sophie Truong and Sheila Hicks I made up some weaves. I enjoyed working with different pieces of thread, thick and thin and different coloured. I used natural yarn as its normally stronger and easier to work with. I also believe the colours work well together, especially white on white.
In each weave I have used a selection of yarns intertwining with, building into and onto one another. This creates more textured and interesting weaves that are innovative and appealing.

My media book

I have taken part in a project where focusing on anatomy, nature, plants, microscopic and insects I have worked in an old book on textured paper with many different media focusing on different areas of anatomy.
I went to Manchester museum looking at these different areas and photographed interesting pieces and objects. I found microscopic slides of wood which I have reflected on some of the pages within my media book with acrylic and ink, water colour and fine liner. I also developed onto the eggs of butterflies as my main focus was on bugs and butterflies, which I reflected in white acrylic on textured paper, drawn with black fine liner.
I also researched Encaustic styles which is working with wax. I used some collected twigs, leaves and moss which I mounted onto a acrylic covered page in my book with wax. The wax engulfed the objects and created a frosted look over the top.
I also worked with brusho painted which created gorgeous textures for prints. I loved how the colours all connected together and worked well next to each other.

Ink Drawing

With the influence of different types of music, I created this ink drawing. Whilst listening to softer, slower music my drawing was a lot more careful and neat, however when I listened to much more abstract music my state of mind was nervous and my drawing got a lot more chaotic. This spontaneous drawing built up with patterns and aztec inspired prints in a busy composition.
I also listened to poetry and took selected words out of the poems which also inspired my drawing. It was interesting to me how influential listening to music can be, and how it can differ drawing skills, productivity and pace as well as your state of mind.

'Venus' sculpture

'Venus' sculpture
Inspired by Stone Age art, I researched the 'Venus' which was a teaching aid for young girls who were going through puberty. They had exaggerated breasts and hips which could teach young girls about the changes they would go through during puberty as well as motherhood.
Using clay and collected twigs, I made up my own Venus which was small enough to be held, similar to a real teaching aid. I collected the twigs as this is all that the people living in the stone age would have as there was not as much knowledge and technology like there is today. I used some of these wooden materials to carve and mark the patterns in my Venus sculpture like the examples that were found from the Stone age period.

Wire Sculpture

Ram Skeleton Wire Sculpture

On the course I am doing now (Art and Design Foundation Level 4) I am involved with types of media and art that I'm not fully familiar with and wire sculpting is one of them. However when i finalised this piece I was surprisingly proud of myself. I would love to hang it up as an ornament or use it as an interior design project.
I started to research the holy relics used in the medieval world where there were strict status divides. However holy relics were normally skulls which portrayed that we were all equal after we die which means we should all be equal in everyday life.
I chose to create a wire sculpture that reflects a rams skeleton as it almost looks evil which goes against religion and the faith that we should all be equal. It reflects the evil division between the monarch, nobles, knights, vassals, merchants, farmers, craftsmen, peasants and serfs (slaves).
I enjoyed working with wire which was a new experience for me and I love to take part in new workshops.

Photography

Here are some examples of my photography and creative manipulation skills. Using photoshop I can use photography to make interesting pieces of work with the use of gradient, colour, copying and so on.
This photography was used as developments for my mono printing. Using my sisters and myself as models in my work, I can easily direct a photoshoot in the senses of styling in clothing, hair and makeup as well as posture and facial expressions.

Awareness Campaign 'Riots 2011'

'Riots 2011' article

As the brief for my Graphic Design A-Level exam was 'Meetings, Experiences and Encounters' I chose to focus on the UK Riots 2011. In more depth I chose to analyse the article headline 'Flaming Morons' which focuses on the youth of today being the blame for this devastating encounter. The media emphasised that the blame was to be appointed on the younger generation which created the bad stereotype of teenagers throughout Britain.
Therefore I created a front cover illustration for the 'Independent Magazine'. This emphasised the 'yob' stereotype of teenagers as I involved a red hooded jacket to portray the incorrect ideology of teenagers being dangerous. I figuratively created the hooded jacked out of hand drawn typography which flickered out symbolising the fire and destruction of the UK Riots which further more reinforced the headline and pun 'Flaming Morons'.
The message behind my Illustration on the front page is that the idea of elderly being in the wrong for discriminating against the younger generation. Using an unconventional 'rioter' with stereotypical 'thug' clothing reflects the idea of discrimination. My illustration forces the older audience to re think when they prejudge teenagers.
Inspired by the illustration of Paul Willoughby, Shephard Fairey and James Victore I have produced three illustrations that portray the idea of the youth being blamed for this encounter. There is a sense of exaggeration in my illustration of the young girl in a dress with a innocent posture with a balaclava to hide her face. This exaggeration is to communicate the message that not all younger people are to blame when in fact half the percentage of rioters were actually of adult age.

'Shrub' Typography

'Shrub' Typography                                                             'Change is up to you' Poster

Using the them of the issues surrounding nature and its conflicts I have created a typography that reflects a nature influenced environment. The letters are made up of twigs, leaves and stones that i collected from my local park. I made up letter forms with these objects and photographed them in order to create a full alphabet which highlights the idea of nature and a surrounding environment.

Broken twigs and sticks have been used to suggest a broken up society as well as the idea of deforestation; a conflict within nature. However, rather than creating a deformed grunge typography that could amplify a corrupt society, I have screened in a photograph that makes up the lettering in colours consisting of different shades of green. The result of this communicates the message that if we change, we can change our surroundings to create a less exploited environment. Instead we could appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and therefore, my posters quote communicates the message that change is up to us.

Arctic Monkeys Poster and Album Cover

Poster Design for Arctic Monkeys
Prints used on the design

CD Cover for Arctic Monkeys

My project brief was to design a gig poster and album cover for a band of my choice that fit in with the theme 'Inside, Outside, Inbetween'. I set out to design the poster and album cover for the band Arctic Monkeys reflecting their music and lyrics concerning nostalgia, rebellion and relationships for one of their secret gigs.
I researched lyrics and their music videos all portraying desirable, rebellious and sensual women. Therefore I created mono prints of three models I photographed in luring poses who looked directly in the camera to show a sense of direct excitement to reflect the same excitement of that inside the gig itself.
Anna Wilson, Wes Wilson and Greg Gossel were the main artists that inspired me throughout my final designs. I added texture inspiredly Greg Gossel which I edited into hand drawn typography of different lines of lyrics as well as the mono prints. The poster only consisted of the lyrics rather than the band name of Arctic Monkeys to keep the sense of secrecy and excitement as well as to portray the deeper meaning inside their lyrics.

'Mon Naturel' Brand

Logo and Packaging

Cushion product design
iPhone Case Designs

Using an illustration I did in response to the artist Sanna Annukka I created a logo design for a brand identity linking to a nature brief concerning deforestation for my Graphic Design A-level. The illustration is made up of minimalistic trees in the style of Sanna Annuka who uses less detail and more abstract shapes within her work. The hand written type works well in the design and can be easily related to house hold interior products aimed at the younger generation.
Using photographs of nature (plants, flowers, twigs etc) taken by myself I created kaleidoscope images to form prints on the products my brand could sell.
I also made packaging to be used in the brands international shops, made with a natural cotton 'bag for life' which links to the aims of my brand in helping save the environment.

Sketchbook Work

Here are some of my sketchbook pages that focus on analysing work and developments of my work. In the analysis of my work, I can back up and support my ideas as well as portray my processes.
